Course Objectives

Students study a General English course for lessons 1, 2 and 3.  This is followed by a Communicative lesson in lesson 4.

General English

Our General English courses are designed to improve students’ skills in all skill areas; reading, writing, listening and speaking.  You will learn useful vocabulary and grammar every day to help you gain the confidence to communicate in real life situations.  Each class has clear objectives to help you reach your language learning goals and your teacher will set structured tasks to support these objectives.  Our teachers will monitor your progress closely – giving personal feedback and correction, where necessary, to help you become more accurate and more fluent when communicating.  Course books are used and adapted to meet students’ needs.

Communicative lesson

This lesson focuses on improving your ability to communicate by enhancing your speaking skills.   You will have 50 minutes of further speaking practice, through structured speaking tasks, which support the General English course objectives.

Study Skills

New for summer 2017, our Study Skills course is a General English course designed to give you a greater understanding of the different types of exams we do here at LLA. In addition to our regular General English aims, each week, you will look at a different test, practise doing some examples and decide whether it is the right exam for you.

Please be aware that our Junior Summer School classes are divided by age and therefore are mixed ability.

For our Study Skills course, the levels available are:

Lower (Elementary (A1) – Low Intermediate (B1)

Higher (High Intermediate (B1+) – Upper Intermediate (B2)

If you are a new Leeds Language Academy student, you will need to take our Quick Placement Test (a multiple choice test of basic grammar and vocabulary), complete a writing task and have a short interview to assess your level, and then you will be assigned a class. The speaking interview can be completed on Skype, but the written task must be done in person.

Homework and Assessment

Students are expected to do one hour of homework/self-study each day. Tests are done regularly to assess your skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing.  There are progress tests in weeks 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 of each term.  A final test is done in week 12. If you pass the final test you can progress to the next level.
